David and Fernanda’s son Alex Bogran age of 11, was diagnosed in May of 2017, with osteosarcoma. This is a rare bone disease which affected Alex’s upper tibia.  Alex’s knee and upper tibia were replaced, but the cancer was totally removed. Alex went through 18 chemotherapy treatments and leg surgery, but today he is cancer free!  Going through this personal trial, this prompted David and Fernanda to find a way how they could help other families going through the same situation here in the US and around the world.  Wanting to help, Fortika Coffee Company was born. Fortika (for-tik-a), an adjective that derives from the Esperanto language which means fortified, robust or able-bodied— this expresses exactly how Alex has dealt with his personal difficulty, overcoming his personal fight with cancer. At the same time, Fortika also describes the richness and quality of our coffee.

Fortika Coffee Company is committed to donate an important percentage of the company’s net proceeds to The Alex’s Story foundation. The Alex’s Story foundation was started with the heart of donating financially to pediatric cancer research, assisting families confronting the repercussions of pediatric cancer, helping pediatric cancer centers in countries where coffee beans are purchased, and aiding organizations that focus on helping children and youth around the world.
